- This is the newest design from our Funkii filigree collection. They are featured in Canada’s No.1 trade magazine for gift and tableware industry—Retail News. They are very delicate. We named them Cairo. I watched a not very well known movie before I went to the Accessories the show in Las Vegas. The movie was about a yonger girl from New York who was pusuring her dream of becoming a professional dancer but followed her love to Cairo. She was broken hearted out of love but found her ture love of belly dance. As I always love Bollywood music and dance and I was a bit familier with belly dance, but this movie made me more aware of this ancient art. Belly dance is a Western-coined name for a traditional Middle Eastern dance. The term “Belly dance” is a misnomer as all parts of the body are involved in the dance; the most featured body part in raqs sharqi being the hips. Belly dance takes many different forms depending on country and region, both in costume and dance style;; and new styles have been invented in the West as its popularity has spread globally.
Although Western dancers view Egypt as the Holy Grail of belly dance, belly dancers in Egypt are not well regarded. Egyptians do not consider it a respectable profession, and most belly dancers performing for tourists in Egypt today are foreigners.
Dancers are not allowed to perform certain movements or do any floor work.
State television in Egypt no longer broadcasts belly dancing. A plan to establish a state institute to train belly dancers in Egypt came under heavy fire as it “seriously challenges the Egyptian society’s traditions and glaringly violates the constitution”,said Farid Esmail, a member of parliament. - Above information was from wikipedia.org.
- Then when I was in Las Vegas, I met a beautiful lady who I had the pleasure to get to know her through conversation. When she told me her age, I was really surprised. She is way yonger than her age. She is full of energy and always smile. She is the national manager of a very well established company that sell fashion accessories. She works long hours and travel a lot for the business but she said she eats carefully and exercises a lot. One of her favor form of exercies is belly dance. She showed me few moves and more than half dozen of retailer buyers stopped. She told me she would love to purchse one pair of our filigree earrings for her dance. She chose the one which was featured in Your Prom magazine.
- So when it came to design our Spring 2010 collection of filigree earrings, I had her in my mind when I designed this pair of earrings. I did a little bit of research on Egypt, and drawed inspiration from its amazingly graceful architecture.
- I had the pleasure to meet this lady again twice this January in Dallas and Las Vegas, she was lovely and smiling as always. She loved this pair earrings and I hope you like them too.
